Real Estate Law Section

Please plan to attend the next BAMC Real Estate Section meeting on  Tuesday, February 14, 2017.  Our presenter, cybersecurity attorney Jennifer G. Smith, will discuss how you can prevent and respond to cyber-attacks and data breaches, protect your client data, and avoid becoming a statistic.

Real estate transactions and professionals are increasingly targeted as the flavor du jour for cyber criminals.  Portable devices, insecure emails and phishing schemes make the real estate market fertile ground for fraud, so like many small business owners, real estate agents are particularly susceptible to data breaches. They often underestimate the risk of unsecure communication, and criminals love a vast inventory of protected data.  According to an NAR survey, 23% of members regularly collect Social Security numbers from clients; 12% collect financial account numbers; but less than half of those members maintain data security protocol.  This has become an expensive oversight: property managers, brokers/agents, title agents, mortgage brokers, developers, and appraisers must comply with individual state notification requirements when data security is compromised.  At a cost of $201 per record, plus recovering fraudulent wire transfers, fines and penalties—it begs the question: Are you ready for a cyber-attack?

The meeting will be held at 8:00 a.m. in the Sixth Floor Conference Center at Shulman Rogers’ offices at 12505 Park Potomac Avenue, Potomac, MD 20854, and breakfast will be provided.  RSVPs are appreciated to Donna Olenick at DOlenick@shulmanrogers.com.

We look forward to seeing you there.
